Three Keys to a Great Team

By Doug Franklin July 30, 2012

Teamwork is foundational to a great team.  It is impossible to develop or maintain a team without it.  A team is a group of people working together for a common mission.  This is a pretty simple definition but it requires a lot of hard work.  Let’s look at three key ingredients that make teamwork possible.

1. Great teams value teamwork
Each member of the team must care deeply about the team and its members.  Teams that care about being a team accomplish more than any one person or collection of people can do on its own.  However, when some team members don’t care about the team, it negatively affects the entire team.

2. Great teams are committed to the team
Jesus said in Mark 3:25, “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.”  A divided team can never reach its full potential.  All members must sacrifice to see the team be successful.  Even if one or two team members lack full commitment, the team cannot operate at peak performance.

3. Great teams have strong leadership that promotes teamwork
Leadership makes all the difference.  In order for a team to reach its potential it requires strong leadership.  If the team member see that the team leader values the team and is committed to it, they are more likely to follow the leader’s example.  Leaders create opportunities for teams to grow and develop in powerful ways.
