New Job Adventure
Yesterday, Angie and I picked up a Burundian refugee family (mom and three boys) from O’Hare. They had lived their entire lives in a refugee camp. Automatic doors, Automatic sinks, automatic paper towel dispensers, and diapers were all part of the fascination of the first 10 minutes. When we encountered the first door that didn’t open by itself, the boys put their hands together and tried to will it to open. See, every door they had ever seen open automatically – that’s the case when every door you have ever seen is in an airport.
On to the apartment orientation….
Door knobs, drawers, hot and cold water; try explaining a door knob to someone who has never seen one. The fridge demonstration was awesome (one boy tried to crawl in) and then of course, the boys wanted to stand on the balcony which was fine, until they dropped their drawers and turned on the faucets! The toilet was the next stop in our orientation…we have some things to learn in our new job!
