Leveraging Legacy

Youth Ministry is about students, adult volunteers and parents. Usually in that order. We almost never think about our Sr. Pastors as being part of what we are doing with students. I believe we are missing a great opportunity. Sr. Pastors represent legacy. Legacy is powerful, it’s a life lived for Christ, an example of someone who sacrifices for the kingdom and it demonstrates perseverance. Most students don’t think Sr. Pastors are cool but they do respect them, often more than we do. Students think they are special and having real insight into a life lived for God. We in youth ministry need to leverage this legacy. We need to think strategically about using our Sr. Pastors in our student ministries. Here are three ideas on how to leverage this legacy:

1. Teaching
Ask the Sr. Pastor to do a 4 week teaching series for the youth group. He can pick his favorite topic. Make sure he or she includes Q & A time. Students will love the opportunity to ask questions.

2. Leadership  Development
Ask your Sr. Pastor if he or she will meet with your student leadership team. Have the Sr. Pastor share about tough leadership decisions and how they have grown as a leader.

3. Events
Ask the Sr. Pastor to participate on retreats, mission trips or outreaches. Their involvement will be great for your students, volunteers and parents. The Sr. Pastor may also love it.
