Personal Discipline

By Doug Franklin December 9, 2010

Leadership requires personal discipline because leadership doesn’t take place on a stage. When we think of improving our leadership we think mostly about improving our presentations from the front. The truth is you can only improve those skills so much. If you want real leadership work on your personal discipline. What I mean by this is focus on the small stuff. For example: spend time interacting with people by making them feel like they are the only person in the room, serve before speaking, get all the admin done before hand so you can focus on people during an event, love people more than the task, and meet expectations from those you serve. These leadership actions will grow your influence and leadership. Younger leaders check out the older leaders around you; how much time do they spend encouraging and loving people vs. being master presenters? Most older leaders I have been around do all their leading before they ever get up on stage.
